Early morning sunshine at Moreton Corbet Castle
A hidden “English Heritage” gem that’s well worth a visit
A hidden “English Heritage” gem that’s well worth a visit

Originally, and with only my snobbishness and innocence to blame, I’d crossed Moreton Corbet Castle off my list of proposed visits, and how wrong I was to do so. Driving toward my first of call for this particular Sunday morning I happened to simply drive right past the castle and after accidentally catching a quick glimpse of it through the trees to my right, I simply had to stop. I climbed and eventually vaulted over a particularly high fence and after leaping safely into the grounds that surround the castle I happened upon a kindly old lady out walking her dogs in the earliest of Sunday morning sunshine. She jokingly pointed me in the direction of the more formal and simple gateway entrance to the estate a mere two hundred yards further along from where I leapt (from a good height) into the grounds, and after much embarrassment and nervous laughter, I took in the splendour of this medieval and later Elizabethan period set of castle ruins as well as the fantastic St Bartholomew’s Church which stands adjacent to the ruins.
