“has always been an important settlement ever since those clever ancient Britons found that the magnificent glacial Mere was an ideal place for some genuine rest and relaxation. You know the sort of thing — a spot of fishing, gentle boating and gazing at the views and the wildlife”.

“Over the centuries Ellesmere has developed into a vibrant market town with numerous Georgian and half-timbered buildings surrounding the medieval streets. Ellesmere’s shops are many and varied, with the type of shops that other towns let go of years ago and not a “Mall” in sight”.

I like the cut of the jib of the writer who penned that last sentence!

The Junction of the Llangollen Canal at Ellesmere — Part 2.

Leaving Ellesmere you will soon have two choices as the Llangollen Canal branches either west and across the border into Wales via the famous aqueducts at Chirk and Pontcysyllte before ultimately the town of Llangollen itself, or in a north westerly direction toward Cheshire where it merges with the Shropshire Union Canal.

“Refuge” and “Labyrinth”.

“Refuge” is wooden sculpture to reflect “the experience of a child displaced by war, famine or climate change” and “Labyrinth” a “shared experience in which words in different scripts evoke a sense of being lost and ultimately finding refuge”.

“Mankind” — This is a quote attributed to Eglantyne Jebb, co-founder of “Save The Children”.
