“Quando la luce splenderà!”
Birthday wishes for a grand old lady
10th March 2023
I never knew what to write in a birthday card Mum, I’m sure you’d agree
Today is no different, so that makes it three
Birthday’s that is, that one special day
When an Angel descended from heaven, and decided to stay
But worry not princess, a poet I am not
You’d still have been proud! If it rhymed, or it didn’t
What dreams may come, What promises to keep
None shall sleep Mum.
None shall sleep.
Now for some altogether more lucid words courtesy of a grand old lady’s favourite song, composed by Giacomo Puccini and sung by Luciano Pavarotti, a man for whom his very singing invigorated my dear old Mum to sparkle and shine, and light up like the brightest firework in a night sky.
“Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o Principessa
Nella tua fredda stanza
Guardi le stelle che tremano
D’amore e di speranza!
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me
Il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
Quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà
Il silenzio che ti fa mia!
ll nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè! Morir! Morir!
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle! All’alba vincerò!
Vincerò! Vincerò!”
Songwriters Giacomo Puccini, Renato Simoni, Guiseppe Adami
“None shall sleep,
None shall sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No… no…
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win!
I will win!”
“Quando la luce splenderà!” is the 18th overall chapter as well as the concluding brief chapter in Act Two of Three of my self-published book “Golden Sky” (published 28th March 2024) and here’s a handy link as well as some promotional fluff for a series of books I’m immensely proud of.
