“Red All Over The Land” (or the more commonly known RAOTL) is Liverpool FC’s “last fanzine standing” and after 28 years of this independently produced and published voice for the fans, by the fans, celebrated its 300th all time issue this month. 28 largely dominated internet years later, RAOTL is still going strong (despite the good natured moans and groans of the Editor!) and has to be lauded as some achievement indeed when considering the stable mates and running mates it’s out-lasted (both club and country wide) and for being a printed and published medium in an old school manner that has never changed despite the digital world creeping and closing in from all sides.
I’ve written at length on my association with this fanzine and will bring newer readers up to date as such: I used to collect the inaugural editions of this fanzine as well as another Liverpool beauty of the time entitled “Through the Wind and Rain” (TTW&R), keeping them pristine in a Harry Potter style cupboard under the stairs as well as extolling the virtues of both the fanzine and the whole independent medium itself to any and everyone who would listen. I had every edition of both fanzines for well over a decade before subscribing to both, being saddened by the ceasing of production of TTW&R and for 8 editions now I’ve been a somewhat regular contributor to a column entitled “Yesterday’s Paper” in RAOTL. Truth be told I’ve rather stolen a tiny piece of the fanzine and “Yesterday’s Paper” is now under the lock and key of my quill and ink and it’s the grandest of understatements to state once again that I’m immensely honoured whenever an article of mine features in a fanzine I’ve treasured and cherished for nearly three decades. I couldn’t be more pleased or “made up” as they say in Liverpool if you paid me, and you’re more than welcome to try.
To commemorate the 300th edition I submitted the article linked immediately below and today received the confirmation of the fanzine tumbling through my letterbox that I’d made the cut once more.
Here’s to Issue 301!
