A sunshine filled Special Edition!
Powis Castle was scheduled to be my first port of call in a day of Welsh sunshine and at the suggestion of a good friend. With a suggestion such as this I couldn’t possibly go wrong, clearly I didn’t and it’s another for the “Highly Recommended” category for all would be UK or English/Welsh border travellers. The castle itself sits high atop a rocky mound overlooking a huge expanse of gardens and affording the most beautiful and breath taking views of the rolling Welsh hills and mountains into the far distance. Parking is well signposted and easy (but a long walk from the neighbouring town of Welshpool and it’s magnificent train station) and you’re more than likely to bump into a deer or three!
I could state here how beautiful the castle is and how it dates back to the 12th Century and still remains in an incredible condition. That it was a fortress and castle built to defend the border between England and Wales and, according to legend, has survived sieges, battles and wars across the centuries to be a premier example of a heavily fortified medieval castle that has stood the test of time. But I’ll leave all this and more within the official link at the end of the following short paragraph.
As my budget has a lot of zeroes in it (or more strictly speaking, one zero and no other numbers of which to concern ourselves with), I didn’t enter the castle or the gardens and whilst a little repetitive, I hope there’s an image of the “Statue of Fame” for everyone, or perhaps an image of the famed round tower of the castle or very definitely a favourite image of the numerous deer that ambled their way through the public grounds.
