Like a trusted friend, “True Romance” has kept me company now for over three decades and as I detail in both my written review (penned a decade ago) and the video that accompanies it (recorded November 2023), here’s to the next two decades and more of watching this incredible film.
Why such unabashed love?
It’s directed by the renegade and much missed Tony Scott (RIP)
It was one of the earliest screenplays penned by Quentin Tarantino
A career highlight for Christian Slater yet still trumped by…….
A sexy, sultry and devil may care performance from Patricia Arquette
Val Kilmer as Elvis!
Dennis Hopper and a cameo to literally die for
Christopher Walken:“I’m the Anti-Christ. You got me in a vendetta kind of mood”
Brad Pitt as a carefree stoner!
A sublime movie bad guy performance from Gary Oldman
Cameo performances from Samuel L Jackson, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore, James Gandolfini, Michael Rapaport and Bronson Pinchot
Iconic and beautiful soundtrack from Hans Zimmer
The early rooftop scene when our lovers bare their souls
The late scene with our lovers on a beach
The hotel shoot-out amid a cloud of cocaine and feathers
“You’re So Cool!” being written on a hotel napkin
and so much more.
and I am Clarence Worley, the Christian Slater character. A dreamer. A film fan. A nerdy geek who falls in love too easily. A man who dreams of meeting the lady of his dreams at the cinema and going for pie afterwards to talk excitedly about the film we’ve just watched together.
Cue Hans Zimmer and “You’re So Cool!”
So welcome to the third volume in my “Read Along” series of favourite films whereby I present to you a spoiler free love-in appreciation of the film together with my reading of it via both my Youtube and Rumble Channels. Below you’ll find both the review, my opus blog article on the entire cinematic career of its director Tony Scott and links to my reading of my review via “The Blackford Book Club” on Youtube and Rumble.
This video recording is one of my more lighthearted efforts and without wishing to dissuade you from watching, there’s a couple of minor bloopers as we go along. As I state at the commencement of many of my more personal videos, I’ll never record these to my complete satisfaction as reading aloud or to camera isn’t my gig, it came about out of inspiration and frustration, and I’m just trying to raise the profile of my writing and the 7 volumes of “Essential Film Reviews Collection” you’ll find in Kindle e-book form on Amazon. All of which and more is revealed in the videos.
So kick back, relax, open my review of the film and the video on the platform of your choice and perhaps open that packet of chocolate biscuits you’re hiding from the family in that secret compartment in the kitchen cupboard! Maybe even treat yourself to a glass of wine.
Then slip “True Romance” into your DVD player, watch this incredible film once more before asking a loved one if they want to go and get some pie and discuss the film.
You’ll never feel more alive.
