13th Century Castle on the England/Wales border.
I first stumbled over Whittington Castle last Summer in my search for quaint, picturesque stretches of canal that my regular walks along the waterways wouldn’t necessarily lead me to. Just three miles outside of Ellesmere in Shropshire and en route to the nearby historic market town of Oswestry you’ll find this little gem, described on the official website linked below as “the first community run castle in England”.
“Originally a “motte-and-bailey” castle, this was replaced in the 13th Century by one with buildings around a courtyard whose exterior was the curtain wall of the “Inner Bailey”. As a castle of the Welsh Marches, it was built on the border of Wales and England very close to the historic fort of Old Oswestry”.
